ABSTRACT Geopropolis, a mixture of plant resin, wax, soil and salivary secretion, is produced by the stingless bee Melipona fasciculata. This aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of geopropolis collected from beehives in two phytogeographical regions, flooded fields and cerrado, in the municipalities of Palmeirândia and Fernando Falcão, Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil. The geopropolis compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Additionally, total phenolic content was determined with the Folin−Ciocalteu reagent and antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The four geopropolis...

Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of crude extracts and isolated constituents from Chresta scapigera BJM
Schinor,Elisandra C.; Salvador,Marcos J.; Ito,Izabel Y.; Dias,Diones A..
Crude extracts and eight isolated compounds from Chresta scapigera were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities by the agar-well diffusion method. Twenty strains, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts were used in the bioassay. Hexane extracts presented the best results while ethanol extracts did not indicate inhibition of the microbial growth. Amongst the evaluated compounds b-amyrin acetate, tiliroside and luteolin showed the strongest antimicrobial effect.

Lethal and sublethal effects of triterpenes from Junellia aspera (Verbenaceae) on the grain storage insect Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Pungitore,Carlos R.; García,Matías; Gianello,José C.; Tonn,Carlos E.; Sosa,Marta E..
Duration of the pupal stage, toxic activity and nutritional indices induced by oleanolic acid (I), maslinic acid (II), and daucosterol (III) isolated from the native plant Junellia aspera and chemical derivatives, were determinated on larvae, and adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The current study shows that these triterpenes acts as acute toxic compounds when were applied topically and/or incorporated into the food of the red flour beetle. Nevertheless, no activity related with the nutritional status of this insect was produced.

Silva,Isabel Cristina Vieira da; Oliveira,Pollyana Felix de; Barbosa,Gleyce Moreno; Wessjohann,Ludger A.; Cardozo-Filho,Lucio; Holandino,Carla; Muzitano,Michelle Frazão; Leal,Ivana Correa Ramos.
Cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide and the natural products could be a source of bioactive compounds. Passiflora mucronata (PM) belongs to a very known vegetal genus, although, there are no studies about cytotoxic activity or isolated compounds. Different extracts from PM were obtained by liquid-liquid partition (P), Soxhlet (Sox) and supercritical fluid (SFE1-5) extraction techniques, being compared concerning their yields, chemical profile and cytotoxicity. The Sox extracts showed the highest yields (6.03%: hexane; 2.51%: dichloromethane) followed by SFE (from 4.34 to 1.63%) and partitions (1.06 and 2.26%). The hexane partition (HP) showed the best cytotoxic activity against K562 cell line (IC50 = 18.72 µg.mL-1). From HP, the...

Saponin production from Quillaja genus species. An insight into its applications and biology Scientia Agricola
Guerra,Fernando; Sepúlveda,Sebastián.
ABSTRACT: Quillaja genus (Quillajaceae family) is endemic to South America, where is represented by two species, Quillaja saponaria and Quillaja brasiliensis. One outstanding characteristic of these forest tree species is their production of saponins, a family of amphipathic glycosides, involved in the defensive response of plants against biotic and abiotic factors. Saponins are metabolites of economic importance due to their chemical and physical properties. Basic and applied research efforts performed during the last decades, mainly on Q. saponaria, have placed these compounds as an important raw material in industrial areas, such as food and beverage, cosmetics, vaccine production, biopesticides, among others. In this review, we summarize information on...
